It's been a minute, and yet it feels like only weeks since we shipped this noble, aspirational piece by Hiro that espoused the glory of media that has not been bought by corporates. As a reminder, it said these things:
Our ~20,000 subscribers will never see an advertisement or sponsored article, and that’s because crypto desperately needs independent media, now more than ever.
The absence of financial motivation means that we are free to ship whatever we want.
I imagine sometimes we’ll be shipping with real regularity; other times it may be a few weeks before the next piece comes out – whatever it takes to stay independent and free, both in cost and ethos.
But if we allow the corporate voice to dominate the discourse yet again, then we will have failed. I, for one, am not yet ready to fail.
Well.
We clearly shot ourselves in the foot with that. The bullet passed through the meta-farcical bone and into our creative hearts.
The remedy? A slight revision to the revulsion of receiving payment to produce content. This is not a full reversal, though. Both of us stand by the independent ethos of IndyPen, but we've reconsidered the notion that we will never accept a financial reward for publishing content. Specifically: if we feel that an article can be written in a way that is informative, entertaining, and low on shill, and we are aligned with the values of the org willing to pay for that, then we'll do it.
In short, the "absence of financial motivation" closed a few doors that we'd like to re-open, but we couldn't do that without being transparent and accountable to you, our valued subscribers.
That's it for now :)
